What does it take to learn something new? Learning takes effort, grit and a growth mindset!
Adding a new hat to your list of traits takes effort, grit and a growth mindset. If you put out the effort, and keep it up even when is seems incredibly hard, you will see growth. For instance, I have been playing guitar for 25 years, and I’m very comfortable with it, but I have always wanted to sing too. For most of my life, I thought that singers were talented, naturally gifted individuals that just had it. Recently, I read a book by Carol Dweck called Mindset, and I learned that there are two types of mindset, either fixed or growth. With a fixed mindset you believe that traits like singing are due to natural ability. With a growth mindset, you believe that anyone can learn to do anything if they put out enough effort over a long enough time.
I used to have a growth mindset in some areas of my life, but not in others. For instance, I had a growth mindset about playing guitar. I believed that I would get better if I practiced more, but I had a fixed mindset about singing. I believed that some people were born singers, and that I just wasn’t one of those people.
After reading Mindset, I decided to dedicate myself to learning to sing. I bought an app. for my phone to help me practice, and I set aside 20 minutes to practice every day. After a year of singing practice, I still won’t be winning any awards for my singing, but finally, after many months of feeling like I wasn’t seeing any improvement, I am actually starting to sound better and better!
