Become a Scientist: Add being a scientist to your list of personality traits!
Everyone has many different aspects to their personality. When you truly learn any subject, you take on a new personality trait. In other words, everyone wears many ‘hats’, and when you truly learn something new, you take on a new ‘hat.’ My top level goals can be summarized by saying that I want my students to adopt a new personality trait. I want them to think of themselves as scientists!
How do you become a scientist? In this class, you will take your first steps toward adopting a scientific personality by playing a role playing game.
When you play a role playing game, you adopt a new aspect to your personality that may be totally new and different from your current personality. For instance, when I play the Legend of Zelda, I become Link, the humble but brave Hylian boy who is renowned for his swordsmanship and boomerang accuracy. I have never held a sword or thrown a boomerang, but when I play Zelda, I become Link, adopting all of his personality traits.
When you step into my classroom, I expect you to work towards growing past your current identity as a student, and add something new: I want you to try out being a professional scientist. You will do this by participating in role playing scenarios that mimic the work life of scientists and science educators. You may never work in science directly, but by learning to self identify as a scientist, and follow the motto of science: “trust no one’s word” you can free yourself from the tyranny of authority figures and feel confident in your ability to understand the world the through the lense of evidence. In other words, you will learn to figure things out for yourself. Once you do this, you will have the confidence that you need to conquer college, get and keep the job that makes you happy while making you money, and participate in a scientifically informed democracy.
